Cornell University Uses a Phantom VEO 710L to Study Flying Insects

Cornell University ( is going to be using a Phantom VEO 710L in their Itai Cohen Group ( to study small flying insects.  Their goal is to observe how the bugs can stabilize mid-air, despite aerodynamic instabilities that challenge their “balance.” The high-speed videography is used to analyze the ways in which freely-flying flies recover from mid-air “stumbles” that are deliberately created. Students involved in this research will prepare for careers in biolocomotion or engineering and testing biologically-inspired micro air vehicles.
